Recent 'momentum' influences choices of baby names, NYU, Indiana psychology professors find Oct 13, 2009
A name that increased its relative frequency one year was more likely to decrease rather than increase in frequency the following year. Similarly, decreases in frequency were more likely to be followed by increases than further decreases. (EurekAlert!)
Trends in DDT and pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles gambiae s.s. populations from urban and agro-industrial settings in southern Cameroon. Sep 30, 2009
Increases in DDT and pyrethroid resistance, as observed in most areas, were generally associated with an increase in the relative frequency of the S molecular form carrying the kdr mutations at higher frequencies. In Mangoum, however, where only the S form was present, a significant increase in the frequency of kdr alleles between 2003 to 2007 diverged with a decrease of the level of resistance to DDT and pyrethroids. Making Summer In The City More Bearable Aug 29, 2009
Heat waves strike with relative frequency in the summer months across southern Europe but the Greek capital of Athens is notorious for its sweltering conditions. The city is particularly prone to high temperatures because of its dense layout, narrow streets, limited green space and long-standing air pollution problem. (Science Daily)
How Evolution Can Allow For Large Developmental Leaps Jul 22, 2009
"The relative frequency of this form could be tuned up to high levels by other mutations.". This study provides a concrete example of a particular scenario to explain developmental evolution. (Science Daily)
Atomic Fountain Clocks Are Becoming Still More Stable Mar 26, 2009
25, 2009) Caesium fountains are more accurate than "normal atomic caesium clocks, because in fountains the caesium atoms are cooled down with the aid of laser beams and come ever slower from a rapid velocity at room temperature to a slow "creep pace of a few centimetres per second at a temperature close to the absolute zero point (Science Daily)
